S.M.I.L.E. as an organisation was built on the foundations of the English Oral Conversation Skills Programme started at St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls in Kloof, in 1991. This extra mural initiative for Grades 4 and 5 English First Additional Language learners, supported by Grades 10 and 11 volunteer group leaders, provides opportunities for young learners to develop confidence in speaking English in a fun stress-free environment. The Grades 10 and 11 group leaders guide the activities and provide friendship and leadership in a nurturing way, and give back to the community.
The English Oral Conversation Skills Programme is a structured CAPS compliant 32 week Programme, supporting S.M.I.L.E.’s classroom learners’ textbooks and dovetails with all the activities conducted in the formal classroom situation.
The schools hosting this afternoon Programme span five provinces:
- Durban Girls High School
- Glenwood High School
- Grace College
- Inanda Seminary
- Intakamezolo Combined School
- St Anne’s Diocesan College
- St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls, Kloof
- Uplands College
- Woodridge College
In 2015 1152 Grades 4 and 5 learners from 16 Community Primary schools and 768 Grade 10 and 11 group leaders from 12 Host High schools are participating in this rewarding community based education Programme.
